Greens and Blues at Cors Caron

Yesterday, as it was the only dry day in the midst of a very rainy period, we went for a walk at Cors Caron. Regular readers will know we have visited this lovely nature reserve many times, it’s one of my favourite places.

Our walk began with lots of greenery and fresh spring growth, like this lovely fern that was unfurling:

We moved on to see a LOT of blue with the green. I’ve never seen Cors Caron with so much water! It’s a bog, so of course there is usually plenty of water locked away, and several large pond areas, but this was something else!

The visiting goose and duck were happy about the large amounts of water of course:

Recently this pond has been pretty low as they are working on the bog (to preserve it) and have reduced the water flow in certain areas. But yesterday it was full to the brim and the island to the right of the image looked very much thinner than normal.

Looking back on the other side of the boardwalk, this area was completely submerged! This is usually just a boggy area with no visible water.

As we continued, I saw a flicker of wings and fortunately I was able to track them to where this delicate little damselfly landed. My first damsel of the year, both in seeing one and getting a photograph of one. You might think this image only has green in it, but it kind of has both as that damselfly is a female Azure Damselfly (Coenagrion puella), and if you look closely you might see a hint of blue in her tail. We decided against going down the riverside walk when we saw it was just a tad wet! I’ve seen this area being a bit soggy before, but nothing like this! I’m loving the reflections of the clouds though.

Now, you’ll have to forgive me here, as there’s no blue and not even much green, but I have to share these! My first dragon of the year, and it was a beautifully helpful dragon too, posing calmly while I photographed it from different angles. This one is a 4-spotted Chaser (Libellula quadrimaculata), one of the earlier dragons too see around here.

The amount of water made for lovely reflections of the blue sky and clouds.

Heading back towards the car park I couldn’t resist another unfurling fern.

And through the gaps in the trees along the path we got glimpses of some horses grazing on the bog

We had a lovely visit and were so lucky to have a sunny day with less wind too. There has been so much wind and rain lately, and today it’s back to raining again, so I’m very glad we went out when we did!
