Different Waves

Well, I realised why I hadn’t got very far with the Waves of Love cardi that I mentioned the other day… it’s because it’s all slip-stitches and no matter how loosely I try and do them it’s a struggle to work into them for the next row. I gave it a good go but have decided it’s not for me.

However I then remembered that the designer has lots of items with similar sorts of construction so I thought I’d try something smaller than a cardi. And when I looked through their patterns I found some that use yarn-over slip stitches instead of regular slip stitches, which I find way better to work with – I use these for ribbing all the time. Yay!

So I have started a new hat using this technique, using the pattern SPICY knit-look beanie by Adriana M.. It’s not quick, but it is very cool. I’m just over half way so far.

It’s a really interesting construction method with short rows going back and forth to create lines and patterns in the crochet. You make it in panels which go from the top of the hat down to the brim. They’re not separate panels, you keep going into the next panel after finishing one. You do the yarn-over slip stitches into the back loops only so you get the raised lines which look like knitting.

First panel (when it was not quite finished):

It’s now looking a lot more hat-like although it’s only half a hat so far:

Close up of the cool pattern and how it blends into the brim at the bottom:

I get the feeling there may be more of these types of patterns in my future! 🙂
